Lawyer Drags Restaurant to Court for Charging Re. 1 Extra For Food

BENGALURU: “Foodie” is more of a patriotic term for many taste and food conscious people. In today’s fast-paced time we have discovered a tendency to hang out a lot for grabbing our favorite mouth watering foods that attracts our taste buds. We never bargain while spending money in delicious eateries and sometimes even never bother to check their prices. So, a question arises in mind, have you ever been charged extra penny for the foods that you eat or in the other way round, have you ever ignored to collect the remaining balance of your bill. The Times of India City reported that, T Narasimha Murthy, an advocate residing in Bangalore, lodged a petition in the district consumer forum for charging Re.1 extra for a food item in the restaurant.

The case was registered against Vasudev Adiga’s Fast food private limited for charging 25 for one plate of idlis while the price mentioned in the menu card was Rs 24. The district court ordered the food joint to pay Rs 100 as the compensation amount with an additional litigation fee of 1000. T Narasimha Murthy also insisted that charging the additional sum was unfair and further placed an estimated amount the hotel was charging from its customers.

Adiga’s on the other hand argued that the additional amount imposed on the mentioned dish was directly used for the donation purpose to an NGO that runs mid day meals across the country. Moreover, Adiga’s states that the menu card also carries information for the same. However, Murthy retaliated by saying that the extra Re.1 on the bill indicated that this money was going unaccounted and the basic issue is that the bill should have the same amount as the menu card.

A petition raised by the hotel chain was dismissed by the High Court and the hotel’s petition to challenge the lower consumer court filed on April 2014 was again dismissed on September 8, 2016 following which the order of the lower court was on effect.
