India's Medal Hopes At The Olympics

Bangalore: It took India years to shed the ‘one medal nation’ tag, and now millions of sports enthusiasts are confident that the athletes will return home with a bunch of medals. This time, our medal hopes lie in boxing, shooting, tennis, wrestling and badminton. Here we take a glimpse at India’s medal aspirants who can bring laurels to the country.

Mary Kom:

Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom or simply Mary Kom, is a five time successive World Boxing championship, in the amateur boxing competition organized by the International Boxing Association (IBA). She is the only women boxer to have a won a medal in each of the six World Championships. As of June 2012, she is ranked world no. 4 in the 51 kg women category. Kom won the World Boxing Championship title in Bridgetown, Barbados for the fifth consecutive time. She defeated Romanian opponent Steluta Duta. She is the only Indian women boxer who has qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. On October 3,2010, she had the honor of bearing the Queen’s Baton in its opening ceremony run in the stadium for the 2010 Commonwealth Games which was held in New Delhi. According to SportsPro Magazine, Mary Kom is the 38^th most remarkable athlete in the world. A Muhammad Ali fan, Mary Kom is easily India’s best bet to win a gold medal at the London Olympics.
