India Ranks 41st In World's 'High Water Risks' Nations: Study

Bangalore: Water, an essential for people to survive, is now facing an acute shortage in many parts of the world. Water scarcity is becoming a crucial woe not only in developed countries but also in developing countries. However, India is one among the high risk nations in water stress survey, says the first-ever global water stress rankings by World Resource Institute.

The country ranks at 41st position in a list of 181 countries and is among second high risk nations, according to the study.  It also reveals that 37 percent countries studied by the institute experience extremely high baseline water stress, reports Times of India.

The research organization also found that water supplied is becoming increasingly difficult to attain on a planet hit by global warming and growing population.

India's 3.6 baseline water stress indicates that the country uses between 40 percent and 80 percent of the water available every year.

As per the report, the situation worsens during the summer season as the demand for water is extremely high during this season and India overused both surface and ground water.

The report however shows a ray of hope on how to effectively managed water stress by citing the example of Singapore, which has the highest water stress ranking of 5 and has no freshwater lakes or aquifers. Singapore is considered as an exceptional water manager as the country invests heavily in technology, international agreements, and responsible management to meet its increasing water demands.
