India Needs 68 Percent More Fulltime Scientists

Bangalore: In the next five years universities and R&D institutions must ensure there is a steady supply of skilled manpower which is required for the country, said V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Executive Vice-President, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment.

Dr. Pillai inaugurated a conference on ‘Recent advances in surface science’ in Madurai recently, as reported by The Hindu. He said in his address that research in basic sciences formed the core of scientific development. According to Science, Technology and Innovation Policy 2013 of the Central government, India needed 68 percent more fulltime scientists. Development could be attained only with the help of effective institution-industry tie-up and more research and development work.

Dr. Pillai said “Though more women than men go for higher studies, the number of women doing research is less. Their talents must be better utilized. Women must be encouraged to opt for research so that the growing demand for scientific manpower can be met,” as reported by The Hindu.

It is noted that in spite of improvement in research activities India still lags behind compared to other countries. Dr. Pillai stressed on the importance of ensuring quality in research to the level of global standards. Many States need a scientific approach for putting into practice social schemes and sustainable income creation activities. He said that young scientists should do research in these areas. He further said biologists, engineers and technologists should work together on socially-relevant subjects like healthcare.

He said higher educational institutions and the faculty should encourage students to undertake research and offer them the opportunity, create the right ambience, and give guidance. He also added that scope for advanced research in many areas in the country is very bright.
