India Among World's Poorest Countries


China

For centuries China was regarded as a leading civilization, in the world of arts and sciences.

Gradually the country was overpowered by civil unrest within, outcome of famines, military defeats, and intruding foreigners which saw a decline in its glory and fell into the world of poverty.

After World War II, the communists under Mao Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of millions of people.

After 1978 the focus was on market-oriented economic development, where the living standards of the Chinese people improved but still kept a larger population under wraps who were devoid of change. According to the report mentioned China was home to about 13 percent of the global extreme poor.

Nigeria

Nigeria has 9 percent poor population residing in the country. It was under military rule for nearly 16 years, but in    1999 a new constitution was adopted. Nigerian government is working hard on its agenda of reforming the petroleum-based economy. The country is torn by corruption, mismanagement, institutionalizing democracy, and long going ethnic and religious tensions. In 2003 and 2007 Presidential elections were negative with several irregularities and huge violence. Currently it has the longest period of civilian rule since independence. With all the dysfunctional government and stationed crime, poor population rose in the country. In January 2014, Nigeria assumed a nonpermanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2014-15 term.
