Follow These Simple Tips to Be Safe From ATM Frauds

BENGALURU: Recently, India woke up to a banking nightmare, where about 3.2 million debit cards were reported to be hacked. The country witnessed one of the biggest and alarming data breaches in its history. Debit card data of top banks including Axis Bank, HDFC bank, and ICICI bank were reported to be compromised.  According to the police, the data breach was initiated using malwares, while other prominent experts fear this move as a calibration of the hacking tools.

Not only Malwares are used to compromise banking data, but also several modern techniques are developed by expert hackers to breach ATM machines. Here are few simple tips to be safe from ATM frauds.

First of all, use a PIN that does not relate to you. For example, avoid using your date of birth or vehicle number as the PIN. When entering an ATM cabin, check for any unusual activities inside or outside. Make sure that no one is watching you. Check the ATM cabin for any cameras pointing to the keyboard or the screen.

Before inserting the card into the machine, make sure that the card reader is aligned with the ATM machine and there are no unusual color changes or additional lights blinking on the machine. While performing the transaction, always keep the keyboard covered. If the keyboard feels spongy or too rough to press, avoid using the ATM machine as there might be a duplicate keyboard on top of the original one.

After completing the transaction, never leave the ATM machine until the transaction completed screen disappears and the welcome screen is displayed.
