Five Prominent Executions Which Made Headlines And History In India


BANGALORE: Though Indian judiciary is criticized for letting criminals slip out of its loopholes, it has been sending a strong message to all those who dare to commit crime. The recent instance is execution of Yakub Menon, so here goes the list of 5 recent executions by the Courts.

Afzal Guru:

Afzal Guru was accused for Planning and facilitating the 2001 Parliament attack, in which 9 casualties were reported, including eight security personnel and one gardener. Guru was found guilty in all the respective courts. The Supreme Court upheld the life sentence verdict of Delhi high court in 2005 and in 2013 President Pranab Mukarji also rejected the mercy plea filed by Guru’s wife, as a result he was hanged to death in Tihar Jail on 9th February 2013.

Ajmal Kasab:

Ajmal Kasab was a Pakistani terrorist who was one among the terrorist group which attacked Mumbai on 26/11. Kasab was caught alive by the Mumbai police and was later produced to the Court, where he was found liable for 80 crimes. The Supreme Court upheld the life sentence against in 2012 Kasab and He was executed in the same year in Yeravada jail.

Dhananjoy Chatterjee:

1990, while serving as security guard in an Apartment in Kolkata, Dhananjoy Chatterjee raped and murdered an 18 year old girl, who was a resident of the apartment. Chatterjee’s crime was proved in Supreme Court and he was sentenced to death in 2004 and in same year by then President of India APJ Abdul Kalam also rejected his mercy plea hence was hung to death in Alipore Jail.

Auto Shankar:

Auto Shankar was auto drive in Chennai, who was accused for killing 6 lives over the span of two years. Later he was found culpable. Thus he was hanged in 1995 at Salem Central Prison, Tamil Nadu.
