1. Narinder Singh Kapany - The Father of Fibre Optics

Without Narinder Singh Kapany, an Indian-born American physicist, the world would not have witnessed internet or laser surgeries or high-speed communications. The father of Fibre Optics, Kapany unveiled the first actual fiber optical cable in 1952 based on the world-famous physicist –John Tyndall’s experiments post his demonstrations on the ability of light to travel in bent glass fibers. In fact, he was the first person to even coin the term ‘Fibre Optics’ which appeared in his famous article on fiber optics in Scientific American in 1960. The world of high-speed communications is reaping huge profits for many decades due to this mastermind who published 100+ scientific papers and four books on optoelectronics. Not just high-speed communications, but Kapany has set high benchmarks with the advent of high-speed internet and also medical imaging ranging from optical fiber cable networks, endoscopy to laser surgery. With the startling event of Charles Kao bagging the Nobel Prize in 2009 for the discovery of Fibre Optics, Kapany’s groundbreaking research was left unnoticed and never fetched him the Nobel as well as the accolades he rightfully deserved.
