An insight into the number of ration cards in Indian metropolitans

Although food subsidies seem like a topic discussed in relation to the poor, there are different categories of ration card used by people of different socio-economic classes. Here are some of the findings we came across.

The city of Bangalore decided to take their ration card process online. They also have an SMS system to help handle this through non-smart-phones. One study found that Bangalore has over 20 lac fake ration cards in their system only leading us to imagine how many working and functional ration cards are being used by the people.

Pune had a lac fake rashan cards cancelled by the Government in an attempt to clean the system. They also worked toward legitimising their public distribution system and food grain subsidies. The Government is also looking to add biometric information to ration cards which would a massive blow to fake ration cards in the system.

Chennai took to the smart ration card system as well. Approximately 2 crore families were linked to smart ration cards. The project cost the Government approximately 318 crores since they needed to build most of their system from scratch.

Mumbai has 51205 functional ration shops in the city. They cater to a large number of people in need of subsidised food grains. In a poll, it was found that there were 2.48 crore individuals with ration cards using the PDS.

The nation’s capital, Delhi had a cleanup drive in the city as well and found that there was 4 lac inactive ration cards. To avoid these falling in the wrong hands, the Government decided to cancel and remove them from the system.

Hyderabad, on the other hand, has 556211 ration card holder, however, only half the number of them were able to receive foodgrain due to a glitch in the system.
