Shoichi Yokoi: Spent 28 years hidden after WWII

Yokoi might be the only person who took a long time to get relieved from his bad memories about World War 2, and that’s why he decide to hide in a jungle cave for 28 years, even after he knew the war has ended.

He was a soldier in Japanese Army and was send to Guam territory during the war. In 1944, American forces conquered the island and Yokoi went to hiding.

He was discovered after 28 years in 1972in a remote section of the island by two inhabitants. Yokoi has spent the years in underground caves fearing to come out, even after he saw the leaflets declaring end of World War. "It is with much embarrassment that I have returned alive," he said upon his return to Japan. He died in 1997 after leading a celebrity life in his return.
