7 Crore Indians Under-Employed or Jobless



Bangalore: Around seven crore people in India are either unemployed or under-employed said the government.

The Union labour and employment minister Mallikarjun Kharge said in the Rajya Sabha during the Question Hour that "As per results of the latest survey conducted by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) during 2009-10, the number of unemployed or under-employed persons on usual status basis in the country was 95 lakh and about six crore, respectively," as reported by TNN.

He said that the government has been making incessant efforts by focusing on creating productive employment rapidly, in order to raise incomes of masses with the aim of bringing about a general improvement in their living conditions.

Kharge also said "The job opportunities are created on account of growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), investment in infrastructure development, growth in exports, etc," as reported by TNN.

He was quoted saying "No demand surveys are conducted by the government. However, National Skill Development Corporation conducted a study for 21 high growth sectors which has estimated, skilled manpower requirement of 34.7 crore up to 2022."

Kharge responded to another query saying government was not considering any proposal to grant unemployment allowance.
