Literature was one of the powerful medium that influenced majority of liberal Indians. Swarnamukhi Devi was one among the few writers who efficiently influenced the Indians with her liberal thoughts. She was the first woman to write a novel in Bengali and she did that at a very early age of 21. Swarnamukhi also founded the Sakhi Samiti (Society of Friends) in 2896.

Ramabai Ranade

Ramabai Ranade is a pioneer of modern women’s education in India and outside. Ramabai who was married to lawyer and social reformer Mahadeve Govind Ranade started reading and writing. With her husband’s inspiration, she started Hindu Ladies Social and Bombay Literary Club. She was the first Indian woman to address a public gathering in English in 1883. Ranade was the president of the first All India Women Conference and was instrumental in establishing Seva Sadan in 1915, which continues work for the objective of educating girls.
