BANGALORE: Most of the time 'everyone forgets who comes second' and this also apply to the world’s most popular game, Football. With the FIFA World Cup edging closer, Let us have a look at  some of the great sides that fell short in football's greatest contest as listed by MSN.

Argentina, 2006: A favorite pick ahead of the 2006 World Cup, Jose Pekerman’s Argentina side in Germany was one of the front-runners to lift the prestigious world cup and even began the tournament with a positive note.

With many talented players like Juan Roman Riquelme, Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi within their armory, it was one of the most devastating lineup of a football team that the World Cup had ever witnessed before. In the final match, the 1-1 draw against the hosts Germany was widely seen as avoidable, mostly due to the conservatism of the coach, Jose Pekerman. Hernan Crespo and Riquelme were withdrawn with only one goal separating the sides; a move that was punished by Miroslav Klose's 80th minute leveller. Argentina, with Messi on the bench throughout, was thrown out of the competition during the penalty shootout leading to an all-out brawl in the aftermath. It was such a talented team that imploded so badly.
