56,000 Mothers Die in India Annually: Report

Bangalore: The National Rural Health Mission has recently been questioned by a charity organization called Save the Children regarding the gains made in containing maternal and infant mortality, reported Vidya Krishnan for livemint.com.

India ranks the highest when it comes to the incidence of maternal deaths. Further, its share of infant mortality from over the globe comes up to a twenty nine percent.

An annual report conducted by The State of the World Mothers has come up with the conclusion that India sees the death of over fifty six thousand mothers every year. The total number of infants dying within a day of having been born comes up to a three lakh nine thousand each year.

The report stated high infection and poor hygiene as the two main reasons behind death among infants each year. Reasons for this could be inequity and lack of political will, as stated by the non government organization. The economic growth of the country has thus not been of any benefit here due to its unequal sharing.

“If all newborns in India experienced the same survival rates as newborns from the richest Indian families, nearly 360,000 more babies would survive each year,” the report said, as reported by livemint.com.
