5 reasons why the use of private number plates is increasing in the UK

Why is the number of personalized license plates in the UK increasing in recent years instead of decreasing as in other countries where personalized license plates are available?

Recently, the use of personalized license plates in the UK (known as “Private Number Plates”), such as CarReg (Est 1988) private number plates, is increasing. The choice of characters is quite wide, although there are some prohibited combinations.

In 2015, the British State managed to reach the figure of 102 million pounds in almost 335,000 plates sold. However, there is no single reason why these license plates are acquired, so we have investigated what could be some of the reasons why owners usually shell out those amounts of money. In some particular cases, the same license plate may be included in more than one group at the same time. These reasons are similar for all countries with available custom license plates, but they are not the same in all cases.

These reasons can be, mainly, the following:

1) Personal reasons

This is one of the main reasons license plates are personalized. You can relate some fact in the life of the owner, such as his name, his last name, his place of birth, his date of birth, the name of his relatives or pets, or all at the same time, showing less personalization than those of the subsequent points. For example, "NN19 AAA" could show a license plate of the owner named No Name, born in 2019, and whose city contains three letters A. Other examples would be "NNM19" or "N019N4M". Some combinations can also be included within the group of "social status".

2) Show a funny word or something creative

In this case, the license plate can show a funny or witty word or combination of characters, which can make those who see it laugh. For example "MY C48". Although this category is very general, there are nuances regarding some combinations of characters, since a city or a name can be included in the group of “social status”. We can also include the license plates that have been given, showing words of congratulations, love or affection. For example "I10 VEU" (I love you - I love you). The characters “4U” (For you - For you) can be used in the combination.

3) Make a vehicle even more exclusive

It is often possible to find luxury brand vehicles, such as Ferrari or Bentley for example, with ordinary license plates. Getting a personalized license plate can give you even more exclusivity. Some examples could be; "R011SRY" on a Rolls Royce, or "BU 64T1" on a Bugatti, making direct references to the make of the vehicle. In other cases, combinations are used that refer to money or wealth. It is also possible, although very rarely, to see personalized license plates of this type on cheaper vehicles.

4) Display a status symbol

Often related to the previous point, but not necessary for use in exclusive or luxury vehicles. They are frequently used in high-end vehicles, and usually show some aspect related to the owner, such as his job title or an important date for a country in the event that the owner is a foreigner. An example would be "D0CT08" (Doctor) or number 212 for someone from the United Arab Emirates. At this point, it is worth mentioning as an example the license plates of the ambassadors' vehicles, which usually use three letters and a number to identify the country they represent.

5) To advertise a company, organization, group or type of vehicle in very particular cases

Simply put, some companies or organizations use this type of license plate to advertise. Normally, the vehicle is usually already labeled with the logo and the text of the company, so the license plate can even serve as the numbering of the company's vehicles.
