Sonia Gandhi (Politics):

President, Indian National Congress

An Italian-born Indian politician, she is the President of the Indian National Congress, one of the major political parties of India. She is the most powerful women in India and ranks 6th on the list, one place above the U.S. First Lady, Michelle Obama, according to the Forbes Survey of World’s Most Powerful Women 2012. She has not only been the President of the Indian National Congress, but also served as the Chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the Lok Sabha since 2004. In September 2010, she was re-elected as the President of Indian National Congress for the fourth time, thus becoming the longest serving President in the history of the Congress party. The British Magazine, New Statesmen had listed Sonia Gandhi at number 29 as “The World’s 50 Most Influential Figures,” in their annual survey in 2011.
