34,000 Households In Bangalore Prefer Technology Over Sanitation

Bangalore: Possessing a fancy mobile phone in hand seems to be more important in Urban Bangalore, than having a toilet in the household.

According to a survey conducted by Bangalore Urban Zilla Panchayat (ZP), a shocking number of 34,656 households in the city do not have toilets. This analysis reveals a sad and unhygienic state, where lack of sanitary space, leads to open defecation, reports Anil Kumar M of The Times of India.

The areas that come under the Bangalore Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (BMRDA) are expected to have good facilities, but 16,000 households in Anekal; 10,514 in Bangalore North; 6,070 in Bangalore South and 2,038 in Bangalore East do not have toilets.

"An increase in construction activities in the city and its outskirts has led to a sudden spurt in the migrating population. As rents are high in the city, laborers prefer taking up houses in the outskirts and this has resulted in open defecation in these zones," said Bettaswamy, CEO of Bangalore Urban ZP, as reported by Anil Kumar.
