10-Year Old Brings Pride to India, Wins World Junior Golf Title

BANGALORE: Shubham Jaglan, son of a milkman from Haryana, made India proud as he claimed the IMG Academy junior world championship with a scintillating one stroke win on July 16. The seven day tournament was held at Welk Resort in San Diego, reports TOI.

This 10-year old prodigy proved that golf is no more an aristocratic sport. He blitzed the field with 13 strokes including 5 in his final round that eventually helped him emerge as a winner.

Shubham Jaglan hails from Israna village in Panipat, was discovered by Nonita Lall Qureshi, a certified coach and a talent scout for The Golf Foundation. Jaglan was found to be the son of an uneducated milkman who used cement mixer for his bunker shots and tiny holes in his angaan for chips. It was also found that Jaglan was taught most of the golf on YouTube.

This massive win added another feather to his hat, after the 100 titles already won by him.

"Shubham would spend hours watching video tutorials on the computer. A lot of what he had learnt at that stage was self-taught. For someone just seven years of age, his understanding of the mechanics of golf was phenomenal," said Qureshi, who has been coaching Shubham since he was 7.

"Shubham has really adjusted well to the changed culture and language. He goes to Laxman Public School where his grades are  good. He has balanced his game, fitness, education and free time," she added.

Despite being a tough decision to quit their dairy business and hometown, Jaglan’s parents had to shift to Delhi for realizing their son’s dreams.

Jaglan enjoys free playing facilities at the Delhi Golf Club. Amit Luthra, Founder and Chairman of The Golf Foundation also an Asian Games gold medalist, said, "We bought them a Hondo Brio because he had to travel with Shubham in NCR. We ensured his father and he got a US visa. And we took care of his expenses in India and abroad."

Indian golf lovers look forward to this young talent and hopes he bags more title making it to the elite club.
