BANGALORE: Philanthropic deeds are on the rise with many known celebrity. Whether its publicity or innate good will, the world seems fairly better with the charitable balm that soothes the plights of those less fortunate. Several cricketers have also taken a step towards benevolence in which they give back to society by using their wealth and power to uplift the downtrodden.

Ian Botham

The England all-rounder has vigorously worked his body with an overall of 12 long-distance charity walks. He began his first act of charity in 1985 with a 900-mile trek from John o’ Groats all the way to Land’s End. His active participation has risen over £12 million for charity, alongside leukemia research which is one among the principle beneficiaries. Back in 2003, he became the first-ever President of Leukemia Research which is UK’s leading blood cancer charity. His cricketing achievements along with his sustained charitable efforts, gained him a knighthood in 2007 from Queen Elizabeth II.

Imran Khan

Like many others, Imran has contributed to the lesser-privileged sections in the country. The charitable organization, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust was started in the memory of his mother. It provides free medical care for over thousands of people since the inception in 1994. In his mother’s honor, Imran raised donations over $25 million from around the world and launched Pakistan’s first and only cancer hospital. He also launched Namal College, a technical college in the Mianwali District in which around 90 pct of the students receives financial support to study. It is allied to the University of Bradfordshire in United Kingdom.
