BANGALORE: Indians’ fascination for hidden treasures is deep rooted. In a recent incident, the ministry of culture dispatched a team of ASI officials to excavate an old fort in Unnao in Uttar Pradesh as a sadhu dreamt of a huge amount of gold hidden underground in the fort. The exciting anecdotes we hear about hidden gold and emerald are not altogether baseless or unfounded. A 2011 excavation of the Sree Padmanavaswamy temple complex in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala unearthed a treasure trove worth $22 billion. The reason rich Indians and Indian rulers of older times chose to keep their most precious possessions underground has something to do with the frequent plundering by foreign invaders.

Sri Mookambika Temple, Kolur, Karnataka

This temple located in the Western Ghats is a big pilgrimage centre of south India. The temple has a chariot made up of 90 kg of gold, golden jewelry worth 3crores, diamonds and emeralds worth 30crore among its possession. However, locals believe this is nothing in comparison to what is underneath the temple ugrana (storeroom). The symbol of a ‘naga’ present in the ‘Shankara peeta’ suggests the presence of some hidden treasure. The ‘naga’ is supposed to be guarding the riches from the outsiders.
