Illicit Drugs Trafficking: A Rising Problem in India
Bangalore: India has now emerged as a hot spot for illegal drugs trafficking. As per the reports given by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the drug trade still continues to expand in the country to a large extent, reports Pankaj Upadhyay of India Today.
It is also reported that over the last couple of months, such illegal trade has been multiplied many folds. The country’s contribution to the drug world is mainly in the form of opium and other related products as both licit and illicit crops of opium are cultivated within the country.
The U.S. State Department revealed in its report on the Major Drug Producing Countries, "India has a large problem of diversion of chemicals and of Opium production. Because of the diversion from their licit opium that they do grow, it's finding its way to the illicit market, and as much as 30 per cent of their Opium is being diverted," reports PTI.
Most of the illegal drugs are smuggled through Nepal, Myanmar and, more recently, via Tuticorin to Sri Lanka, where it’s processed into Hashish (cannabis resin), Ganja (herbal cannabis) or Heroin.
P K Mishra, Ex-DIG, BSF said, "Drugs in large numbers come in especially for the festive season and air route is mostly exploited and Delhi and Mumbai airports are infamous for that", reports India Today.
India has been listed in the "Majors List" of illegal drug transit and drug producing countries, a categorization of nations which are overwhelmed by drug related violence, crime and corruption.
