Boat Tragedy Kills More Than Hundred, News Not Big Enough for National Media?

tragedy

Bangalore:  It is unfortunate that media did not bother much about a major tragedy that occurred in a remote place in Northeastern state Assam. Was the news not sensationalizing enough for the Newspapers?  Most prominent Newspapers except Hindu failed to bring enough coverage to the Ferry disaster though they had enough time to report after the tragic news appeared around 6 pm on Monday.  News was limited to small columns on the front page and most print media did not give much attention to write further.

Speculations say that the tragedy killed more than 100 people and above 100 are still missing. As per the Ticket sale records there were 280 people on boat. The tragic incident took place in the middle of Brahmaputra River when a cyclone hit the ferry while crossing the river. It is one of the worst tragedies that recently took place in our country.

National media has always been criticized for showing least interest in North East issues. The incident re-affirms those accuses. This incident also shows the tragic nature of media who pays more attention only to the interests of large audience. Newspapers are interested more in providing coverage to IPL news, president candidate news and other sensationalizing news items. It is high time for most media to realize that news is not merely a commodity to sell.
