Top Hollywood Movies that Received the Most Oscar Nominations

All About Eve (14 Nominations – 6 Wins)

There’s no introduction needed for this movie, as the tagline suggests ‘it’s all about women…and their men’. This movie was based on the 1946 short story, ‘The Wisdom of Eve’ by Mary Orr. The film ‘All About Eve’ is an American drama film that received a record 14 Academy Award nominations. You know what’s interesting about this epic 1950 released movie? It’s the only film in Oscar history to receive four female acting nominations (two for Best Actress and two for Best Supporting Actress).

It held the record-nominations for nearly five decades, the film won six (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Costume, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound Recording) out of the 14 nominations even though it was during the time were no musical numbers, spectacular costumes or hi-fi effects were being used. However, the sad fact is that none of the women won the awards for their nominations. Strange!! I guess, 1950s was indeed a tough time for women in cinemas.

La La Land (14 Nominations – 6 Wins)

The heartthrob Ryan Gosling and the gorgeous Emma Stone produced an absolutely beautiful performance in the 2016 American rom-com drama musical film. It portrays the love story of a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress who fell in love while achieving their dreams in the city of angels i.e. Los Angeles.

Won six (Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song and Best Production Design) out of the 14, La La Land nearly got the seventh when the presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway was given the wrong envelope from PwC and they mistakenly announced ‘La La Land’ as the winners, but later it was announced that Moonlight was the eventual winners. But the producer of La La Land and the presenters handled the situation well and was praised for their professionalism. Heartbreak moment for the team, but La La Land went home cheerfully bagging six Academy Awards.

Gone with the Wind (13 Nominations – 8 Wins)

Yet another romantic cinema, the epic film is an adaptation of the 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell. However, Gone with the Wind is still the highest-grossing films as of 2019 (adjusted for inflation) ahead of Avatar, Titanic, Star Wars and Avengers: Endgame. The film tells the story of a woman who is the daughter of a Georgian plantation owner and her romantic pursuit during the time.

The determination of the producer David O. Selznick to find a suitable actor for the Scarlett role, led to 1,400 women being interviewed shows the craving for perfection from the crew. Justifying their hardwork, the legendary movie won eight awards namely, Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Art Direction. Quite an achievement for the entire crew!!
