India's Women Filmmakers: Crafting a Space of their own


Reema Kagti: While she made her directorial debut with the 2007 comedy, Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd, director Reema Kagti came to the fore after her movie Talaash, which released in 2012. The film features Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor. According to reports, Kagti is currently working on her next film, Mr Chaalu, which will feature Fawad Khan and Priyanka Chopra. 

Gauri Shinde: Ad and feature film director, Gauri Shinde, hogged the limelight for her directorial debut English-Vinglish, in 2012. With Sridevi in the lead role, the film also marked a highly acclaimed comeback for the actress. Shinde’s next project is called Dear Zindagi, which features Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan in the lead.

Aparna Sen: Highly acclaimed and talented Bengali actress, writer and director Aparna Sen is mostly known for making some of the most thought provoking films. The winner of three National Film Awards, Sen made her directorial debut with the 1981 film, 36 Chowringhee Lane, which did not do well commercially but won critical appreciation. Sen has also directed Mr and Mrs Iyer and 15 Park Avenue - both of which won National Awards. 

Anusha Rizvi: Screenwriter and director Anusha Rizvi’s made her directorial debut with the film Peepli Live, a satire which delves into the topic of farmer suicides. It was India’s official entry at the 83rd Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film category. Rizvi’s next project is said to be based on author Amitav Ghosh’s novel sea of Poppies. Titled Opium, the film deals with the topic of opium trade during the British Raj.  

Kalpana Lajmi: Based on the short story written by Mahasweta Devi, the 1993 masterpiece Rudaali, marked the entry of Kalpana Lajmi in the big league. Rudaali was India’s official entry at the 66th Academy Awards. Lajmi’s other works include Darmiyaan, Chingaari, and Daman, which confronts the topic of domestic abuse, played by Raveena Tandon.
