1 Devdas (1955)

Director: Bimal Roy

Star Cast: Dilip Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Vyjayanthimala

The famous Bengali novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay has always managed to catch the attention of the directors in Bollywood. This can be said with certainty as three movies have been made on the same novel. The one that made it to the most memorable movie was the adaptation done by the director Bimal Roy.

The story revolves around childhood friends Devdas and Paro (Parvati) who have been love forever and even Devdas’s studying stint in England doesn’t reduce the love in fact it only increases it. But when they grow up Devdas’s dad rejects Paro’s proposal because of the class difference between the families and in order to seek revenge Paro’s father marries her off to a richer landlord who is a widower. This lead to Devdas going into depression and drinking and he finally finds comfort in the courtesan Chandramukhi. But he never forgets Paro and he ultimately dies a painful death at the doorsteps of Paro’s house.

What makes this Devdas special is the way Dilip Kumar got under the skin of the character and managed to weave his way into the hearts of the viewers and remain their defeating all the other actors who portrayed the same character.
