Windows 8 has a default feature of tracking the data usage information and producing it to you when the data usage tracking feature is enabled. It is very useful for networks that have usage limitations.

5. Metering

    Advantage: Reduces data usage and consumption
This feature enables Windows 8 to enable connection metering for network that will thus disable Microsoft updates with an exception to critical security patches reducing data usage from Microsoft as well as other applications.

6. Network Usage Statistics
    Make Over: Real time usage information can be checked from the task manager
    Advantage: Statistical information about network usage and history
The data usage statistics are stored in the task manager from where you can view current network usage and its history along with other resources in a statistical form for better analysis.
