Oracle to Continue Porting Software to Itanium After Ruling in HP Lawsuit

Bangalore: Oracle exclaimed that they are all set to continue porting software and other database utilities to Hewlett-Packard’s Itanium server, after the lawsuit saying that the company was forced to do so was ruled.

In March 2011, Oracle announced that they are thinking of stopping the production of software and databases supporting Itanium. Itanium is an Intel based processor that is mainly used in HP-UX servers. Later that year the drama started, as HP sued Oracle for infringing the contract. According to the lawsuit based on the agreement set on September 2010, Oracle was forced to produce software for Itanium. But later Oracle fought back with another counter lawsuit saying that HP had hidden the truth about the fading Itanium servers.

Now what took another twist was that last month the Californian court ruled out the lawsuit saying that the contract from September 2010 agreed the terms in Oracle porting the software and databases to Itanium servers, till HP stops producing the former.

On Tuesday, Oracle exclaimed upon the court’s decision, "Oracle will continue building the latest versions of its database and other software covered by the judge's ruling to HP Itanium computers. Oracle software on HP's Itanium computers will be released on approximately the same schedule as Oracle software on IBM's Power systems."

The case all started when once so-close companies broke up after Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems and former HP CEO Mark Hurd's move to Oracle. The next phase is all set to commence within days of time, which will decide the fate of Oracle, that whether they have breached the contract and if so how much should they pay in the name of expenses.
