Oracle All Set to Compete With Amazon Web Services

Bangalore: Oracle is planning to develop a new IaaS (Infrastructure as a Structure) that will compete directly with Amazon Web Services, announced, CEO and co-founder of Oracle, Larry Ellison, at the OpenWorld conference. The company also has revealed plans to roll out a new cloud service called Oracle Public Cloud, a software that can run other utilities like Fusion Applications, E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft and Siebel.

But Ellison didn’t address how competitive the IaaS option will be with AWS on cost or did he provide an availability date for Oracle's service.

The IaaS platform will include latest operating system and virtualization technologies, mainly driven by Oracle’s own Exadata, Exalogic and SuperCluster machines.

Ellison delivered some startling facts on cloud computing and Oracle’s views on the matter.

"The fundamental architecture of cloud computing is really a utility model that has been with us for 100 years or more," he said. "It looks exactly like the architecture of an electric utility. All of this is enormous, capital intensive stuff but it's managed by the electric utility and provided to the consumer as a service. The user simply plugs in to get it. All the capital costs are borne by the utility."

Ellison also elaborated that Oracle Public Cloud is all set to change the IaaS platform as the company is totally committed to cloud computing.

Oracle will possess and manage the infrastructures as it's installed on the customer's site, behind their firewall, with fees paid as a monthly charge according to usage. Extra capability could be added, Ellison said.

With Oracle’s latest innovation to span out on both private and public clouds, it’s still unclear the aftermath of many AWS Amazon Machine Images that work on Oracle software, as the company is all set to roll out a contending and competing cloud overhaul.
