India's Consumer Storage Flash Memory Shipments Fall 3 Pct In Q1

New Delhi: Indian consumer storage flash memory market registered shipment of 20.38 million units of micro SD cards, SD cards and pen drives in first quarter of 2013, down 3 per cent year-on-year, a report said.

The market was affected by a price revision across all categories, a tepid growth of 2 per cent in Q1, 2013 over Q4, 2012, said the CyberMedia Research report.

Pen drives was the only category that witnessed 24 per cent growth in unit shipment, quarter-on-quarter, and 14 per cent, year-on-year, largely driven by enhanced shipments by market leaders SanDisk and HP, it said.

Toshiba managed to nearly double its pen drives business (Q1 2013 over Q4 2012) in terms of unit shipments, by introducing price competitive models, it added.

CyberResearch said it saw a trend towards higher capacity storage in the first quarter of 2013. The 4 GB segment captured almost half of the market, while the 8 GB and 16 GB capacity segments witnessed more than 30 per cent growth in unit shipments quarter-on-quarter. The 2 GB market registered a decline of 45 per cent.
