Indian Government to Shift IT Infrastructure to Cloud Computing
Bangalore: Cloud computing clearly owns significant position in today’s technology. And so acknowledging the importance is the Indian government who has announced plans of shifting IT infrastructure onto the cloud platform.
With small and medium Indian sectors still to embrace cloud, this decision indeed is a very bold one, as many of the highly noted IT sectors have already announced that they are welcoming this resolution.
The Indian Department of Information Technology is thinking to set up a nationwide cloud network, which works as a bridge between all state data centers. This move really powers India’s future in e-governance plans as most of the citizens will be availed with all kinds of government services via the internet.
With suggestions from tech giants like IBM, HP, Cisco and Dell to setup private clouds across the states, the Indian IT is planning to expand their data centers throughout the nation as each may cost just over Rs 100 crore.
According to the draft tender put forward by the IT department, last month "State Data Centers will now be operated as a Private Cloud for each State and will be managed by a third party."
India is not the first nation to make this move. As superpowers like the U.S and U.K have already invoked this migration for reducing their costs in duplication of resources and to increase the economical value.
According to Prof Sadagopan - Director of IIIT - Bangalore and Chairman - Core Committee Meeting at the Center for e-governance, Karnataka, "The IT department at center has been talking about setting up cloud computing based services for a while now but what remains to be seen is how fast these services will be set up. Once established, it'll be big shift from our current PC culture but we also need greater understanding of the data security challenges that could arise out of this."
