Cognizant Heftiest On Lobbying, Spends $1.95 Million Last Year

Bangalore: Cognizant, the software company that is based out of New Jersey was recently found to have been spending the highest amount on lobbying. With over 1.6 lakh employees in India, the company has spent much more than any of the Indian based IT outsourcing rivals and even has outpaced NASSCOM who represents India’s $108 billion IT industry.

A probable reason for this could be the recent overhaul of the immigration laws in the U.S. that have in a way produced an effect on the outsourcing industry. Or in another way, it can be assumed that the expensive lobbying efforts are to influence lawmakers.

In 2012, an amount of over $1.95 million was spent by the company on lobbying, which means that the officials in the U.S. were clearly influenced towards getting the regulations governing L1 and H-1B visas easier for IT companies so that engineers could be sent to work at various locations with much lesser difficulties.

Findings have shown that $290,000 was spent by Wipro, $115,000 by NASSCOM and over $5000 by Infosys in the last year. Meanwhile, the amount spent by Cognizant and NASSCOM in the current year are $40,000 and $30,000 respectively.
