9 Biggest Data Breaches of 2014


BANGALORE: We live in a world where almost everything runs through the computer systems—data storage of every business, emails, digitalized communications and online transactions. These are just a few of the macro area dissection of what runs on software. With this kind of mass information and data storage by companies, also comes the need to protect them.

Thus, companies have their own level of security and firewalls to keep cyber hackers and black hats off their data. However companies have still witness breaches in their security systems. These breaches have increased over the past few years. In this present year itself there have been major breaches putting companies at risk of data theft, which could see the end of businesses. Some companies have become major victims of this cyber attack in the last six months.

eBay: The online retail company became a victim of a series of cyber attacks that witnessed  the loss of a major chunk of their customer data collections. The hackers were able to get details of employee login ID credentials. Using these credentials, they were able to get into the company’s information, compromising customer details like their email id, addresses, passwords and numbers.

Reports have shown that about 1.45 million records were compromised, due to which customers were asked to changed passwords.

Neiman Marcus: The American Luxury departmental store is located in Dallas, Texas that sells  products from clothes, beauty products to furniture and house wares. They also operate catalogue and online operations through Horchow, a Neiman Marcus marketing division. The company had witnessed a breached in their security and hackers had stolen information of about 1.1 million payment cards of their customers. The CIO, Michael Kingston appeared in front of the congress, a legislative house, to acknowledge that it was a malware cyber attack.
