BANGALORE: Recently, Facebook acquired WhatsApp in a $19 billion deal adding more fuel to the burning trend of acquisitions and mergers in the tech world. Some of the acquisitions like Google acquiring Motorola only to sell it to Lenovo has made the tale of mergers rather interesting. Though last year was a gloomy year in terms of innovation, it was a great year for financial engineering as there were some important mergers.

10. Yahoo buys Tumblr

After taking over as CEO of Yahoo, former Google executive Marissa Mayer brought the popular blogging platform, Tumblr after negotiations with its CEO David Karp.

The deal helped Yahoo to tap into the younger, active online user base at Tumblr. However, some Tumblr fans were apprehensive that the site could end up being loaded by ads that bring billions of dollars a year to Yahoo.
