AT&T Acquires Verizon Wireless Spectrum For $1.9 Billion

Bangalore: AT&T, one of the largest mobile telecom operators in the world, recently announced its completion of the $1.9 billion acquisition of wireless spectrum from Verizon Wireless. The Texas-based firm plans to use this wireless tool to consolidate 4G LTE coverage, as reported by Steven Musil of cnet.

Nearly seven months after finalizing the deal, AT&T proclaims that it has got hold of 39 licenses which it will utilize for delivering wireless access to 42 million people in 18 states. This multinational telecommunications corporation will be making use of the spectrum, which is a part of Verizon's 700MHz B block, to boost its 4G LTE operation as it may expand its coverage.

The acquired areas cover spectrum in Colorado, California, Idaho, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming. AT&T claims that these newly acquired territories will be a part of its 4G LTE deployment which the firm expects to complete the year 2014.

Apart from the deal, Verizon has acquired the Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum which levers markets such as Los Angeles, Fresno, California, Phoenix, and Portland in exchange.

With a growing need for speedy wireless access, carriers have become more active in coping up with their spectrum positions, which gives them the ability to deliver services efficiently without any interruption or bandwidth traffic jams. Purchasing the wireless carrier T-Mobile USA would have provided AT&T with the merit to compete assertively with Verizon, but the $39 billion deal failed in the year 2011 by the federal regulators.
