The United States based food retailer, The Kroger could claim the sixth position on the list of world’s top ten retailers compiled by Deloitte. Founded by Bernard Kroger in 1883 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the company reported approximately $90.4 billion of annual sales in the fiscal year 2012 that ends in January 28, 2012. Kroger is the largest grocery store chain and the second largest general retailer in the United States by revenue. As of 2010, the company operated, either directly or through its 3,574 subsidiary stores. Headquartered in Cincinnati, it maintains markets in most of the states in America, from Virginia to Alaska. It includes supermarkets, hypermarkets, department stores, convenience stores and jewelry stores. The company is also the parent brand to several ‘banner’ chains, such as Ralph’s in California. Kroger is a union company employing 339,000 people as of 2012.
