Under the government's National Monetisation Pipeline, SBI Life Insurance and Vidyaniti LLP have jointly invested Rs 1,100.61 crore in the National Highways Infra Trust (NHIT), acquiring a 4.25 percent stake through an open market transaction. According to National Stock Exchange (NSE) data, the deal included the purchase of 8.24 crore units at an average price of Rs 133.57 each. The seller in this transaction was the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which divested the units as part of its strategic divestment strategy. SBI Life acquired over 3.74 crore units, which corresponds to a 1.93 percent stake, while Vidyaniti LLP purchased more than 4.49 crore units, reflecting a 2.3 percent stake in the infrastructure investment trust. Despite the size of the transaction, NHIT units ended flat at Rs 133.50 on May 26 on the NSE.
Founded in 2021, NHIT is an infrastructure investment trust initiated by NHAI to monetize national highway assets and draw in long-term institutional investments. This platform plays a vital role in India's overarching infrastructure approach, providing stable, yield-generating options for investors. The recent transaction follows a similar divestment in March when SBI Mutual Fund sold a 4.7 percent stake in NHIT, raising Rs 815 crore.
These occurrences highlight a growing interest from investors in infrastructure assets, regarded as stable and long-term investment opportunities. The capital acquired from the latest sale is anticipated to improve NHAI's liquidity and assist in financing both ongoing and upcoming road development projects nationwide, consequently bolstering India’s highway infrastructure.
