Reliance Retail's Success Will be Measured by its Lasting Social Impact
Isha Ambani, the executive director of Reliance Retail, is focused on a broader vision that extends beyond traditional business leadership. In a recent interview with Fortune India, she shared that her decision to lead Reliance Retail was driven by her personal interests, as revealed by her mother, Nita Ambani. Isha aims to empower millions of Indian consumers, particularly in rural areas, through the company. "My role goes beyond conventional business leadership; it is my sacred duty to ensure that the growth of Reliance Retail is intertwined with India's growth narrative," she stated. She emphasizes that the company's success should be evaluated not only by financial metrics but also by its positive and lasting impact on people's lives and its contribution to national progress.
In the April 2025 issue of Fortune India, which features the Most Powerful Women in Business, Isha Ambani is recognized among 100 trailblazers who are redefining the landscape of their respective fields. This year, the list has been expanded to celebrate more women making significant contributions, reflecting India's diversity. "Our mission is to bridge the urban-rural divide by democratizing access to quality goods and services, empowering millions of consumers, especially in rural Bharat. This is more than just commerce; it’s about fostering inclusive growth and uplifting the aspirations of every Indian," she explained.
Under Isha's leadership, Reliance Retail has made significant strides in enhancing supply chain infrastructure and omni-channel capabilities. She is also focused on developing the FMCG sector, launching a variety of brands and strategic partnerships, and creating a designer label powerhouse for the apparel and lifestyle segment. Since she joined in FY15, the number of Reliance Retail stores has surged from 2,621 to 19,102 by December 2024. The company reported gross revenue of Rs 3,06,786 crore in FY24, marking a 17.8% increase from FY23, with net profit rising by 20.9% to Rs 11,101 crore.
"In this age of rapid technological advancement, Reliance Retail is committed to driving innovation that caters to Bharat. We are utilizing cutting-edge technologies, including AI-driven solutions, to customize customer experiences to meet the unique needs of Indian consumers," Isha noted. The company is also dedicated to empowering farmers by establishing strong supply chains that guarantee fair prices and market access. "We are actively engaging with local communities, investing in their development, and promoting a culture of shared prosperity," she added.
Reflecting on her journey, Isha advised her younger self to "trust yourself more." She emphasized that while one may not have all the answers immediately, it is crucial to believe in oneself and follow one's instincts. "There will be moments of doubt; let them fuel your growth rather than instill fear. Keep moving forward; you are stronger than you realize," she encouraged. "Always keep the bigger picture in mind and adhere to your core values. Use challenges and difficult times as opportunities for growth, and don’t shy away from taking risks, as it is the risk-takers who make a difference in the world."
