On the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held high-level bilateral meetings with leaders from Malaysia, Vietnam, and Cuba, focusing on strengthening strategic ties, enhancing economic cooperation, and addressing key issues concerning the Global South.
In his meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar bin Ibrahim, the two leaders reviewed the progress made in India-Malaysia relations since PM Ibrahim’s state visit to India in August 2024. Discussions focused on a wide range of areas including trade and investment, defence, education, healthcare, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s strong condemnation of the recent Pahalgam terror attack and acknowledged Malaysia’s support on issues of mutual concern. The two leaders also shared views on regional security and multilateral cooperation. Modi congratulated Malaysia on its successful ASEAN chairmanship and welcomed its continued support for the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, especially the early conclusion of the ASEAN-India FTA review.
PM Modi also met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi described the interaction as a 'good conversation', signaling continued cooperation between India and Vietnam.
In a significant meeting with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, PM Modi discussed enhancing cooperation in key sectors including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, traditional medicine, and digital public infrastructure. The two leaders expressed keen interest in working together on Ayurveda, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), disaster management, and capacity building.

The MEA stated that both sides agreed to collaborate on global concerns such as healthcare, pandemic preparedness, and climate change, reaffirming their shared commitment to representing Global South priorities in multilateral forums.
“PM Narendra Modi met with President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez of Cuba on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro”, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed in a post on X, highlighting the wide-ranging discussions held between the two leaders.
These bilateral meetings reflect India’s proactive diplomacy to deepen regional ties and strengthen global cooperation.
