Micron Collaborates with NAMTECH to Boost Semiconductor Talent in India
Micron Technology, a leading global player, and the New Age Makers Institute of Technology (NAMTECH), an educational initiative by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering talent development for the semiconductor manufacturing sector in India. The signing took place during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, with the presence of Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics, and Information Technology, as stated by both companies in an official announcement.
"The partnership will include experiential education and training programs focused on cultivating a globally competitive pool of talent and is aligned with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) for capacity development," they said in a statement. The ISM program initiated by the government seeks to establish a resilient and self-reliant ecosystem for semiconductor assembly and testing. The goal is to position India as a global center for electronics manufacturing and design. It is anticipated that the semiconductor manufacturing industry in India will experience a fourfold growth, reaching a capitalization of $110 billion by the year 2030.
"With the collaboration between Micron and NAMTECH, we are shaping the future of semiconductor education and manufacturing in India, while sculpting a global narrative of innovation and technological prowess", Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics, and IT said.
"This partnership, forged under the umbrella of the India Semiconductor Mission, propels our nation towards a self-sufficient and pioneering role in the semiconductor landscape. To further support the semiconductor industry and its ecosystem, we also request Micron to establish a Center of Excellence in Gujarat", Vaishnaw said.
Micron's track record of establishing cutting-edge manufacturing operations and cultivating skilled leaders is set to be instrumental in supporting NAMTECH. This assistance will involve the development of industry-grade semiconductor assembly and test laboratories, clean rooms, and additional infrastructure necessary for establishing an incubation hub. The aim is to provide students with immersive and hands-on learning experiences using state-of-the-art equipment, as stated by NAMTECH.
"This synergistic collaboration with NAMTECH is an opportunity to build the talent and skill essential to the semiconductor assembly and test industry. The partnership enables us to leverage India's well-established talent pipeline for the semiconductor ecosystem, not just regionally but also on a global scale", said Gursharan Singh, Micron’s Senior Vice President of Global Assembly and Test Operations.
"NAMTECH's deep focus on experiential learning, coupled with Micron's preeminence in semiconductor technologies, will cultivate skilled specialists adept at navigating the intricacies of a rapidly evolving sector that will continue to rise in the Indian subcontinent and beyond", Sanjay Sharma, NAMTECH Board member and Vice President of ArcelorMittal said.
