India's Top Telecom Players to Create Pool of Telecom Professionals

BENGALURU: With the insistence of the telecom department (DoT) and the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), top players in the Indian mobile industry are creating nation-wide pool of industry-ready telecom professionals for the sector's specialized needs, reports ET.

The DoT asked all telecom service providers to train students across industrial training institutes (ITIs) in line with the industry's operational requirements. The respective students will be trained to handle the technical work relating to rollout and maintenance of mobile networks. The decision t helps the government policy of involving the private sector for revamping technical institutes such as ITIs for skill building and developing employable human resources for key industry sectors.

The Indian unit of Russia's Sistema JSFC, Sistema Shyam Teleservices, has directly partnered with 24 ITIs to give some 1,500 students technical grounding on how mobile networks run and also a working knowledge of network elements, installation and commissioning of mobile towers, base stations and optical fibre cables.

"The objective is to ensure graduating students from these ITIs have the right technical skills to handle daily running and maintenance of sophisticated mobile broadband networks and tower installations, as we plan to tap into this pool to meet our future staffing requirements," says, chief information & technology officer, Sistema Shyam.

The TSSC is a joint government-industry initiative that is backed by the National Skill Development Council (NSDC) and the Department of Electronics & IT and telecom associations representing mobile carriers and tower operators. The COAI is working closely with TSSC, which has approached nearly 1200 ITIs to implement this skills development program envisioned by the Centre. The COAI represents India's biggest telcos such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, Idea Cellular, Telenor, Aircel and Reliance Jio Infocomm. Experts suggest that the telecom sector is slated to generate 7 lakh jobs in the next five years.
