Delhi Airport Issues Travel Advisory amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions
In short
- Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport has resumed normal operations but issued a travel advisory due to heightened security measures
- Passengers are urged to stay in contact with airlines, adhere to baggage policies, and arrive early at the airport.
- Over two dozen airports have been closed until May 15
The passengers have been asked to remain in contact with their respective airlines, comply with all baggage policies, and arrive early at the airport to adjust to any longer security checks.
While tensions between India and Pakistan are still rising, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport has resumed normal schedules but released a detailed notice to travellers, advising against possible disruptions from heightened security protocols and changed airspace policies.
The advisory, which was issued on Saturday, focused on the necessity for travelers to remain informed and ready for potential delays. "Delhi Airport" operations are routine at this time. But in view of evolving airspace conditions and enhanced security arrangements as per directions from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, a few flight schedules may be affected and security checkpoint processing times may be longer," the airport added in a statement.
Travelers have been advised to stay in contact with their respective airlines, adhere to all baggage rules, and arrive early at the airport to allow for any prolonged security checks. "Stay updated with flight updates from their airlines. Adhere to hand baggage and check-in luggage guidelines. Arrive early to provide for possible delays at security screening. Cooperate with airline and security personnel for hassle-free processing. Check flight status through their airline or the official Delhi Airport website," the advisory stated.
It also added, "We urge all passengers to use official sources for reliable information and not spread unverified information."
More Than Two Dozen Airports Closed Until May 15; Flights Canceled by Airlines
The alert follows extensive air travel disruption over northern and western India. No less than 24 airports major hubs such as Srinagar, Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Leh were closed for civilian purposes until 05:29 hours on May 15. These airports had originally been shut only until May 10, according to PTI.
The Airports Authority of India and aviation officials previously released NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen), suspending civil flights at 32 airports for a while. The prolonged shutdowns impact a number of places, such as Ludhiana, Shimla, Dharamsala, Bathinda, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Pathankot, Jammu, Bhuj, and Jamnagar.
As a reaction to the prevailing situation, Air India has suspended flights from and to Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Bhuj, Jamnagar, and Rajkot. "Passengers with valid tickets for travel within this period will be provided with a one-time waiver of reschedule fee or a full refund in case of cancellations," the airline tweeted on X.
IndiGo also declared that it will suspend operations to and from ten cities Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Leh, Chandigarh, and Dharamsala until 0529 hours on May 15. "These precautionary measures have been instituted with your safety and security as our highest priority," the airline said.
Conflict Drives Aviation Disruptions
These moves come after heightened military action under Operation Sindoor, where Indian troops attacked terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation was undertaken in response to last month's Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of at least 26 individuals.
As security continues to be a top concern, additional advisories and modifications are anticipated in the days ahead. Travelers are advised to track verified sources for real-time information.
