Companies that Hatched Surprisingly
DuPont
DuPont, now a famous brand for Teflon nonstick cooking pans, Corian countertops, and durable fabric Kevlar, was originally a company that made gunpowder! Yes, the company that was founded in 1802 by the French immigrant E I Du Pont was originally an explosives company. And as the century got turned to the next one, the company also thought of a shift from the explosives business to the business dealing with chemicals, materials and energy. But today, the company has a diversified focus in a wide range of areas like food and nutrition, healthcare, apparel, safety and security, construction, electronics and transportation.
An Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton came up with a drink in 1886, which was a fragrant, caramel-colored liquid. He took his formula to Jacob’s Pharmacy, where it was found that it tasted better when added with carbonated water. This way the popular brand Coca-Cola took birth. Pemberton’s friend Frank Robinson was the one to name the drink Coca-Cola, by writing the same in his unique handwriting, which has become one of the unforgettable logos of the day. They started to sell the drink about nine glasses a day at five cents each. Now the company sells millions of cans and bottles per day.
