Are Technological Advances the Key to Enhancing Global Services?
Technology is quickly reshaping global services, revolutionizing different industries and altering how companies interact with customers worldwide. Utilizing advanced technology allows businesses to optimize operations, expand their reach, and provide more personalized and efficient services. In areas such as communication, healthcare, finance, and education, technology enhances organizational productivity, broadens influence, and tailors offerings. As technology continues to advance and impact the economy, it's important for our societal norms to adapt in parallel. The emergence of Artificial Intelligence as a major platform shift holds the potential to significantly impact our future growth and prosperity. This development prompts to consider the implementation of universal basic income as a new layer of the social safety net to address the changes brought about by AI.
India's Tech Boom
The reforming of global manufacturing is largely influenced by geopolitical shifts and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, developments in robotics, 5G, data management, and AI are the main drivers behind the trends of reshoring and near-shoring. The rapid integration of intelligent digital technologies is increasing across various sectors such as electric vehicle production, electrical batteries, and solar panels. Even traditional industries like steel, previously seen as slow-moving and conservative, are now embracing these innovations.
India is increasingly emerging as a central hub for technology and services, powered by its innovation, skilled workforce, and vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem. Cities such as Bangalore and Hyderabad are becoming major global tech centers, cultivating a strong startup culture that impacts a variety of technological fields, including software development, artificial intelligence, and human virtual assistance. India has emerged as a key global player in technology and services, reshaping the global economy through its pool of skilled professionals and vibrant IT sector. It has become a center for innovation, software development, and outsourced business services. With the world's largest population, exceeding 1.4 billion people, and a strong economy that has seen significant growth over the past three decades, India's per capita income has increased by an impressive 245%.
India Rises as Global Services Factory
As per the recent report, India has experienced a significant surge in its global services exports over the past 18 years, driven by the rise of Global Capability Centres (GCCs). According to a Goldman Sachs report, titled 'India’s Rise as the Emerging Services Factory of the World', GCCs have been pivotal in boosting the economy and employment. Bengaluru leads as a hub for GCCs, followed by Delhi-NCR. Over the past 23 years, GCCs in India have more than doubled, increasing from 700 to 1,580. This growth has boosted employment, with around 1.3 million individuals currently working in GCCs. By 2023, the total number of employees in the sector reached 1.7 million.
The expansion of GCCs has fueled real estate growth and boosted services exports, catalyzing economic growth and job creation. GCC revenues in India grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.4%, reaching $46 billion in 2023. India's services exports hit nearly $340 billion in 2023, growing at a CAGR of 11% since 2005 and doubling the global rate. India's share in global services exports has increased from under 2% in 2005 to 4.6% in 2023. Computer services account for nearly half of India's exports, while professional consulting is the fastest-growing sector.
Vikram Ahuja, CEO & Co-Founder, Talent500, says, “Operating on a global scale, both in terms of talent and projects, GCC setups exhibit a remarkable level of flexibility. This flexibility encompasses adjustable work timings, hybrid work models, and even remote work options, making them highly sought-after workplaces particularly appealing for women in the tech industry”.
