Amazon has announced that its e-commerce exports initiative, Amazon Global Selling, is on track to surpass $13 billion in cumulative exports from India by the end of 2024. The company has set an ambitious target of achieving $20 billion in exports by the end of 2025.
The platform has seen significant growth, with Indian sellers increasing by 20% over the past year. Currently, there are 150,000 exporters utilizing Amazon Global Selling, collectively offering over 400 million Indian products to international markets.
Bhupen Wakankar, Director of Global Trade at Amazon India, highlighted the company’s ongoing investment in tools and technologies to support sellers. “We’re investing significantly in tools and technologies to help sellers optimise their reach, enhance product discovery, and increase sales. The program’s success is reflected in the growing number of exporters building thriving businesses on Amazon’s global marketplaces”, Wakankar said.
In 2023, the beauty category emerged as the fastest-growing segment on Amazon Global Selling, with a remarkable 40% year-on-year growth. It was followed by apparel, which saw a 35% year-on-year increase, and other categories including health and personal care, toys, and home goods.
The United States, United Kingdom, and Canada remain the top international markets for Indian sellers. Additionally, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Mexico are notable markets where Indian products are gaining traction.
Indian skincare brand Minimalist has seen impressive results from Amazon Global Selling. Founders Mohit and Rahul noted, “Amazon’s Global Selling has been instrumental in rapidly expanding our customer base worldwide in markets like the US, UK, Middle East, Singapore, and Australia. Within three years, we’ve grown over 135% on Amazon USA and 75%+ on Amazon UK”.
Delhi, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra lead as the top exporting states, with smaller cities such as Anand in Gujarat and Gautam Buddha Nagar in Uttar Pradesh achieving $89 million and $47 million in sales, respectively, in 2023.
Wakankar also touched upon e-commerce policy, emphasizing the need for streamlined cross-border logistics and payments. “The more these become easier from the regulatory compliance perspective for small businesses, especially in e-commerce exports, the better off small businesses will be”, he added.
