BANGALORE: Three of the top ten websites in the world were started by college students, as well as several of the biggest hardware and software companies. However, the path to success wasn’t easy- there were many challenges for these young founders. Lifehacker.com has compiled a list of the top companies founded by college students.

Bill Gates and Paul Allen

Bill Gates and Paul Allen are the cofounders of what was once the most profitable company in the world. It’s slipped a bit since the 2000’s but is still one of the largest software companies in the world. Bill Gates and Paul Allen met in middle school and became friends over a shared pastime of computer programming. They later went on to university, until Paul Allen convinced Gates to drop out of Harvard to start a company. After a stressful beginning, they achieved success when they licensed their Database Operating System to IBM in 1981.
