Revealed: Indian Firms Most Transparent Among BRICS, Says Anti-Corruption Watchdog

Bangalore: Anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International in a survey of emerging market multinationals, revealed that Indian companies are the most transparent in BRICS, while at the same time warning Chinese business community to take immediate action to raise their standards, reports Reuters.

The countries were rated based on their present measures to fight corruption, how they report on their organisations and how they disclose data related to revenue, expenditure and taxes.   Chinese companies were among the three quarters of the companies that scored less than 5 out of 10. Where 0 is the least transparent and 10 is the most transparent.

Out of 10 Chinese companies, 8 of them were the worst performing companies. In fact, companies like Chery Automobile Co and Mexican company Mabe scored zero points.

Whereas, Indian companies performed best among BRICS and topped the list by scoring 54 percent in the overall index.

India's Tata Communications topped the list in the anti-corruption programmes category with 92 percent, followed by three more Tata companies.

In a sub-index ranking of the BRICS nations, which the corruption watchdog accounted for 20 percent of global economic output and 15 percent of world trade, the companies from first-placed India were followed by South Africa, Russia, Brazil and China, reports IANS.

"As emerging market companies expand their influence they should seize the opportunity to play a bigger role stopping corruption internationally," said Huguette Labelle, head of the Berlin-based independent pressure group, reports Reuters.
