PPP is not Privatising Water: Khurshid

New Delhi: Water Resources Minister Salman Khurshid said the government favours public private partnership (PPP) for water in a new policy, but it does not mean privatising it. Replying to supplementaries in the Rajya Sabha Monday, Khurshid said the PPP mode was suggested in the new water policy, which is still under formulation, so that expertise and capital of the private sector can be utilised for public. "New water policy encourages states to go for PPP, but it does not mean privatisation of water. It is intended to use private goods for public good," Khurshid said. He also said that water was already being provided under PPP in several cities, and it was for states to take the final decision. The minister also informed the house that the new water policy gave first priority to agriculture for water. "The policy is still under formulation though it is in advanced stage," he added.
