Make In India Kicks In: Govt Switches to 'Zero Effect & Zero Defect' Mode


BENGALURU: The government turns on the ‘Zero Effect-Zero Defect’ (ZED) Mode to handle one million small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The objective is to produce top quality products using clean technology. Why is there a sudden need for high quality produce? Simple—to execute the Make in India Mission.

The ZED Model is jointly being worked out by the Ministry of MSMEs, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and Quality Council of India. The official method is going to be formulated within a month.

Currently the SMEs in India contribute to 8 percent of the country’s GDP, 45 percent to manufacturing output, 40 percent to exports. That shows the silent and enormous contributions of MSMEs in India. Therefore it is  Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aim to improvise the quality of their production and help them contribute to the mainland development that can establish a strong ‘Brand India’. A Brand India that is famous for ‘Zero Effect, Zero Defect’— that is the manufacturing that is free from defects and the one that also doesn’t have any adverse impacts on the environment.

The aim of this model is to help these small-time businessmen by providing them with adequate training and funding to move up the value chain and produce quality products. . Under the proposed program, unemployed youth will be trained to become quality professionals.
