India's 100 Year Old Companies That are Still Young and Strong


BANGALORE: Do you know when India built its own refrigerator? When the first diesel engine was introduced in Indian markets? For the questions to be answered, you have to look back into the Indian history say for 100 or 200 years back. India is jam-packed with such historic companies who have surpass all, say it is recession or depression, ups and downs and truly they deserved a reward of heroism to sustain and provide their services for so long.

Let’s take a glance into the exciting journey of the 10 Indian companies that survived for more than 100 years and still counting.

1. Britannia

Founded in 1892, with startup cost 295, Britannia was formed. With an aim to provide nutrition rich biscuits to the soldiers in the war operation, company started in a miniature house in Kolkata.

In 1918, C.H. Holmes with Gupta integrated the company into Britannia Biscuit Company. Later in 1979 company’s name was changed to Britannia Industries Limited, since then Nusli N Wadia became the chairman of the company.

Company manufactures a wide variety of products such as biscuits, bread, cakes, rusk and almost all types of dairy products. According to Britannia Annual Report 2012-2013, company net sale of products worth 5649.66 crores.

2. Dabur

The king of Ayurvedic medicine manufacture in India is Dabur India Limited. With an endeavor to provide ayurvedic medicine in villages Dr. S. K. Burman founded Dabur in 1884. His idea of ayurvedic medication for the cure of deadly diseases such as malaria, cholera came up as a huge success; soon he was recognized as a trusted ‘Daktar’ or Doctor who cures diseases and Dabur derived its name from the Devanagri interpretation ‘Daktar Burman’.

Dabur has consistently sustained its position mosly in rural supermarkets. The products offered by the company are Dabur Chyawanprash, Dabur Honey, Hajmola and Dabur Amla. Dabur Annual Report for 2012-2013 reported a sale of 6146.4 crores.
