India Would Soon Get a 5X Higher Resolution Weather Forecasting

A Boston- based weather Technology Company, ClimaCell, ventures into a strategic partnership with Google Cloud to provide high fidelity weather forecasting models in the geographies that do not possess such services presently.  The model's output could be accessed through Google Cloud's public dataset program.

The company intends to make critical data free and accessible, by stimulating innovation. These models would be initially introduced in India and its access would be given to the general public along with developers, scientists and business people.

The ClimaCell Bespoke Atmospheric Model ("CBAM") feeds from its proprietary "Weather-of -Things" inputs, this model brings in millions of new observations that have not been previously used for weather forecasting. ClimaCell has gripped on the connected world to bridge the large sensing gap and to aid in augmenting forecasting across the globe.

So far, the world had to depend on the weather forecast reports generated by global models with course resolution and lower refresh time. Now, introducing CBAM, ClimaCell and Google Cloud would provide high resolution and refresh time to levels exceeding mesoscale models in various developed countries starting from India. CBAM India applications are of high impact and broad from the efficiency to forecast flood events to optimizing farmers and enterprise decisions.

Being the world's first cloud-native Numerical Weather Prediction model, CBAM uses Google Cloud Platform to reach unprecedented scale and deliver unprecedented flexibility. Furthermore, Google Cloud would contribute cloud resources to support the vast computational effort associated with running such a high-performance model. CBAM India would be provided at 2km resolution and 15-minutes time step, along with 48-hour forecast.

"For the first time in history, a private company is offering a full-blown operational numerical weather prediction model for an entire country, working continuously and providing high-resolution forecasts for up to 48 hours ahead. Not only is it a historical milestone, but we are also providing it completely free of charge. We invite others to join us in making weather data free and accessible for everyone," says Shimon Elkabetz, CEO and Co-Founder of ClimaCell.
